Ink & Dagger - The Fine Art Of Original Sin

Download.

Found out yesterday that Ink & Dagger have "reunited" and they'll be playing two shows in Los Angeles mid September. WHAT? Of course for those of you who forgot, their singer is dead and he's being replaced by the singer from Thursday: a band I've never listened to but I assume is shitty. Don't know how I feel about this.

Le Shok Discography.

LE SHOK was a synth punk band from Long Beach, California, and probably the biggest influence on that whole "scenester" subculture of the early to mid 2000s. YOU KNOW THE ONE: white belts, girl pants, dyed black and razored haircuts swooping over one eye, etc. Not to mention they were basically ripped off by every band ever out of the Southern California area (Mika Miko, Abe Vigoda, No Age, etc.)
Funny thing is that they were just a bunch of drug addicted assholes that everyone's forgotten about. But I remember when everyone wished they'd been old enough to see Le Shok play at Zed Records or Vinyl Solution and shelled out hundreds of dollars for a single 7". I also credit this band with the rebirth of vinyl. BOLD STATEMENTS for sure, but are they really all that great? I don't really know. I'm really biased because it's what I grew up with but at least slam heroin and dance to it.

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombination in 12 Bursts

Download.

I'll never forget the first time I listened to this CD: It was a lazy weekday afternoon sitting in the back of my 6th period Geometry class. I'm about to doze off like I usually do, but on this particular day my friend offers me his Discman assuring me I'll be pleasantly surprised. He was right about the surprised part, but I'd say I was more confused than anything. Among what had to be one of the heaviest records I'd heard at the time was thrown in techno and jazz interludes, and even a fucking violin. Then there was a point where I wasn't even sure if it was a studio album or a live recording.
Refused were a hardcore punk band from Umeå, Sweden, formed in 1991. The group disbanded in 1998, only a couple months after this album-the most important record in modern hardcore-was released. Bold statement and I'm sure plenty will disagree but in 1998 the hardcore scene was muscular jock types on Victory records. These bands never accepted Refused because of their "pretentiousness," and yet the punk scene never accepted Refused because they were too abrasive. And so emerges The Shape Of Punk To Come: an over the top chimerical bombation aiming to shake the hardcore punk scene to its very foundation in hopes of eliminating its complacency within mainstream culture. Twelve years later this has become an essential listen to anyone interested in extreme music.
The classics may go out of style but this one is timeless.

Antihero Resuscitator

Born Against - Battle Hymns Of The Race War

Download.

Born Against was a New York hardcore punk band featuring Sam McPheeters (who would later go on to be part of Men's Recovery Project and Wrangler Brutes.) They embraced extreme leftist ideals and DIY ethics. Very abrasive, very pissed, very underrated.
The song "Refused Are Fucking Dead" is a nod to this album which contains the track "Born Against Are Fucking Dead."

Not a patient boy.

Fugazi - Repeater

Download.

Fugazi was a seminal post-hardcore band probably best known as Ian MacKaye(Minor Threat)'s other band. Minor Threat and Fugazi were the two biggest influences on Refused, at least in the sense that they were the only two bands all the members could agree on.
This record had a direct influence on The Shape Of Punk To Come. The drum beat on the song "Turnover" inspired the drum beat on "Summerholiday Vs. Punkroutine."
