Seminal Norwegian black metal record released in 1994. I'm not going to lie to you, this is not the best black metal album you will hear, but it is very controversial and important in influence and historic purposes. If you don't know the story of Mayhem, I'm not going to type it all out but basically it involves a feud between two of the members resulting in murder, another guy committing suicide, and a bunch of churches being turned into piles of ash. I'd suggest you look it up on Wikipedia.
