Chelsea Wolfe - Ἀποκάλυψις

Saw Chelsea Wolfe last night. Blown away.
Quite literally apocalyptic folk for your listening displeasure. This is only half of the release; four more tracks have been added to it since I acquired this. You can check them out here.

Mayhem - Wolf's Lair Abyss

An overlooked EP by Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM. First studio recording after De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, though it was released three years after and featured a very distinct sound. Highlights are Maniac's vocals and Hellhammer's drumming.

Wolvserpent - Blood Seed

A few weeks ago I posted an album by a doom drone duo named Pussygutt. They changed their name and released this impeccable album on 20 Buck Spin. One of my favorites of 2010.

Moderne - Moderne/L'Espionne Aimait La Musique

Obscure 1980-81 French synthpop double release compiling both of this band's LPs and re-issued last year. You don't just want this, you fucking need it.
Dif Juz - Out of the Trees

Went to Burger a few weeks ago and got this because it was the most pretentious thing that caught my eye: 4AD 80s band with a weird name and a cool cover. Hadn't listened to it until last week when I was stuck doing calculus all day and it surprised me with how good it was. This is a compilation of two of their early EPs released in 1981. One of them is remixed and partly re-recorded, though I hear it's a very slight difference from the original.
Anyway, Dif Juz were a British post punk band on 4AD. Mostly instrumental laid back ethereal post punk jams with dub influence.

Danzig Discography

Part four of Danzig's selected discography: Classic Danzig.
DANZIG is the current musical outlet for Glenn Danzig, formed in '87 as a transformation of his previous band Samhain when he scored a deal with Rick Rubin. Classic line-up is considered to be Eerie Von (who played bass in Samhain), John Christ, and Chuck Biscuits, with Rubin producing the band's first four records. Together they'd go on to make four of the best metal records with heavy blues and doom influence to ever be recorded.

Danzig II: Lucifuge

Shoppers - Goodbye To All That

Nah, sorry this isn't a new Fucked Up 7" on the rockstar label Matador or a rehashed LP by Sonic Youth that nobody is going to listen to but they'll still say it's one of their favorite albums of the year (coincidentally also on Matador). This is real Syracuse DIY (insert whatever prefix you'd like here) punk: self recorded, self produced, super distorted on tapes that sell out so fucking fast you can't even get them fucking punk. In before they put out a split on Youth Attack and hook up with Albini and it's suddenly cool to say you like their older stuff better.

WFMU's Choking on Cufflinks with Michael Goodstein 2/14/2009

Shitty weather Friday means I finally have some time to clean up my hard drive. WFMU is a free form radio station in New York. Probably the best station in the country as it has introduced me to many artists. Choking on Cufflinks was a show that ran on Saturdays nights from 9-12. This is the show from last year on Valentine's day which featured a live performance by Silk Flowers and Cold Cave (their first performance as a full band.) Also has some amazing music.
Huge thanks to Phillip for sending this to me.

Samhain Discography.

Part three of Glenn Danzig's selected discography: the Samhain trilogy.

SAMHAIN was a band formed by Glenn Danzig in 1983 following the breakup of the Misfits. First album is somewhat similar to Misfits' later work but by their last album Samhain would branch off into their own deathrock/goth metal world shrouded in the occult and heavy drug use. Eventually Danzig and bassist Eerie Von would split from the guitarist and drummer to form Danzig.
There is another Samhain release but I won't bother posting it since it's not very good.

The Cure - Disintegration

I'm getting old.

Been a while

Bodychoke - Cold River Songs

Everything about this release rules: the band name, the title, the artwork, the label. Bodychoke was a 1990s experimental group with heavy ties to power electronics but this is a really heavy noise rock album with a slugdy tribal feeling. Reissued on Relapse last year with a couple of extra tracks. Recommended for fans of Swans, Godflesh, etc.

Ace Of Base - Greatest Hits

No posts until next Tuesday. I'll leave you with some fabulous Eurodance jams.

The Legendary Pink Dots - The Maria Dimension

It's been a while since I've posted an expatriated UK 80s band so here you go. The Legendary Pink Dots are a prolific British group that relocated to the Netherlands in the early 80s. This is their 12th full length, and is considered by a lot of people to be their best work. Sounds like a psychedelic Current 93 meets Coil.

Misfits Discography (Part 2)

Part two of Glenn Danzig's selected discography: Misfits singles, b-sides, and live.

This is probably the fourth time I've done this I hope it's the last because it's a pain in the ass.

Zip containing the following (I guess I could have posted individual album covers but that would have been obnoxious):
Cough/Cool 7" (1977)
Horror Business 7" (1979)- Only the songs Horror Business and Children in Heat
Night Of The Living Dead 7" (1979) - Only the songs Where Eagles Dare and Rat Fink
3 Hits From Hell EP (1981)
Halloween 7" (1981)
Legacy Of Brutality (1985) - Only the songs Who Killed Marilyn? and American Nightmare
Collection II (released in 1995 but the song was recorded in the 80s) - Mephisto Waltz
Box Set Disc 3 (released in 1996 but the song was recorded in the 80s) - Spook City U.S.A.

If you download this along with the previously posted Misfits album, you are now the proud owner of (presumably) at least one version of every studio recorded Misfits track with Glenn Danzig. I'm sure there are some tracks I'm missing but who's keeping track?

The only official live recording with Danzig on vocals. Was originally released as an EP but was later released as a proper album in '87 with additional tracks. Originally recorded in 1981 in New York and San Francisco. This version of "We Are 138" features Henry Rollins of Black Flag.

Ministry - The Land Of Rape And Honey

Pretty much the soundtrack for when you wake up hungover at 7AM in a stranger's house wondering how you there, scrambling to find all your shit, and get the fuck out of there as quick as possible.
Transition between Ministry's early synth sound and middle era industrial.

Pyha - The Haunted House

I've been meaning to upload this record for about a year now but I was just too lazy to rip it off my i-Pod.
폐허 or Pyha in English (translates to Ruined) is a South Korean black metal basement recording project. This is allegedly made by some 14 year old kid in his house, which I think is a bunch of bullshit created by Tumult and Aquarius to sell records. Regardless, the album is actually really fucking good, and even genuinely unnerving at parts. Very reminiscent of early Burzum, maybe Shining and Abruptum.

Misfits discography (Part 1)

Part one of Glenn Danzig's selected discography: all of the Misfits' LPs.

Misfits - Static Age (1978)

This is the first Misfits record but it wasn't released until 1997. Danzig had started his own label called Blank Records, which he released the Cough/Cool single through. Turns out another label came atfer called Blank and in order to not get sued by Danzig they offered him 30 recording hours in their studio. Static Age was recorded with that time but no label was willing to release it, and the record was eventually shelved due to a couple of members leaving the band.

Walk Among Us (1982)

The band's first proper LP features the traditional "horror punk" sound. Kitschy lyrics with b-movie references.

Earth A.D. (1983)

The final TRUE Misfits record featured a more "hardcore" shift. Very noisy, quick, and gory. The original issue is only about 14 minutes long but this is a reissue with the Die, Die My Darling EP included.

Former Ghosts - New Love

Newest from Freddy and crew (that fat gay guy in that awful band whose name eludes me at the moment and Nika of Zola Jesus). I think the girl from Tearist also sings on this. Keep on riding that chill gothwave, bro.

Crass - Best Before... 1984

Contrary to what the name would lead you to believe, this is not a greatest hits compilation. This was a posthumously released collection of various Crass singles together with a booklet which has an extensive essay on the band's history. That's probably the best reason for owning this record because half of the songs are terrible. Seriously. They should have broken up in 1981 because the music gets progressively worse track by track. (Listen to Smash The Mac and try to convince yourself that it's the same band responsible for the Feeding of the 5000.)
That said, the first nine are real fucking anarcho-punk gems that to my knowledge weren't released on studio albums with the exception of the first track.

Danzig - Danzig

It's October, which means you're going to sit through loads of bad horror movies, ingest five pounds of candy, and listen to a day's worth of Glenn Danzig. At least I will.

Edit: While making this post I discovered that everything I've uploaded by Glenn Danzig (except one Samhain album) has been deleted so I'm going to upload all of his discography over the course of this month. So...
THIS RECORD was released in 1988 following what was essentially an evolution of Glenn's previous band Samhain, which itself was a weird evolution of his other band Misfits, into DANZIG. They hooked up with Rick Rubin who produced the album and released it on his new label Def American. In relation to everything Glenn had done up to this point, this was probably his most straightforward/traditional record featuring Sabbath influenced heavy metal with bluesy licks. This remains the band's most popular album due to the song, which I'm sure you've all heard by now, "Mother."

Don't believe the hype.

The Secret - Solve Et Coagula

Flavor of the month band with a horrible name. A lot of people have been telling me to check this band out with much enthusiasm, which is understandable considering it's a European band on Southern Lord with Kurt Ballou production and Justin Bartlett artwork. I was expecting something really doomy and sludgy, but it's quite the opposite, which isn't bad but it just sounds like a watered down Trap Them (same label, same producer, same artist, coincidence?). Metallic hardcore with buzzsaw tone riffs and lots of blast beats. Don't get me wrong, it's a good (not great) record.
