Dec 30, 2010

I'm not going to post a long ass list of records that came out this year and proclaim them as my favorites because I'll probably never listen to them again.
Instead here are my two favorite albums of this year that I know I'll listen to for years to come.

Chelsea Wolfe - The Grime and the Glow

On LP through Pendu Sound. Limited to 500 copies. Buy HERE.

Glad to say I know Chelsea personally. She and her boyfriend Ben are really down to earth, sincere people. Surprised that for a California act they don't have much exposure but I know 2011 will be a great year for them. I just hope they don't get TOO popular because then I'll have to bash them to retain cred. HAH.

Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

Limited LP available through Young God HERE.

Gira is back? Gira was never gone, son. Whether or not I think he should have revived the Swans name to release what is basically a heavier version of Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home doesn't really matter. This is hands down the best album of the year, and quite possibly (though I know it's not hip to praise contemporary works of established artists) one of my favorite Gira involved works. Yes, it has Devendra Banhart but the song is fucking brilliant. This entire record is fucking brilliant.

Other favorites:
Liars - Sisterworld
the Shoppers tapes (1) & (2).

If you are so inclined, feel free to leave a comment with your favorites of 2010.
PS. If you are going to say Kanye West, go troll somewhere else.

Isomer - Serpent Age

Been a while, eh. Holidays have kept me busier than expected. Here's some Australian dark ambient soundscapes for you to brood with. Surprised he's been under my radar this whole time since he's toured with Death in June and NON.

Dec 23, 2010

Various Artists - Kompakt: Total 2

Because everyone seems to be having trouble going to sleep this time of year.
KOMPAKT is a Cologne, Germany based record label specializing in microhouse. This is the second installment of their annual compilation of vinyl releases and exclusives from its biggest artists and most promising newcomers.
Death In June - Nascosto Tra Le Rune

Death In June released an Italian biography earlier this year. 1000 of them came with this CD that included eight tracks culled from the DI6 canon and radio ID's and adverts used to promote an Australian performance.

Dec 20, 2010

Jesu - Heart Ache & Dethroned

New/old stuff from Jesu: a reissue of his first EP (Heart Ache) along with a previously unreleased EP (Dethroned.)

Dec 18, 2010

The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa - Susurrate

In a shoegaze mood. Blame the bad weather.
Nothing says early 90s European shoegaze like bad font and a bunch of turtles, right? Legend has it that Ecstasy of Saint Theresa were a Czech shoegaze band. Their house bot broken into and all their instruments were taken. They had to resort to their sub-par PC to make electronic music and that's when they stopped becoming interesting.
But this record is pretty good, and you can probably impress your A Place to Bury Strangers worshiping friends. Thx to Emily for turning me onto this.

Dec 17, 2010

Makes you wanna blow the stars from the sky

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On

Great track from the mediocre Automatic.

Dec 15, 2010

Pivixki - Pivixki

I'm not going to bullshit you and tell you this is some amazing avant garde masterpiece. Most people who listen to this are immediately going to write it off as pretentious noodling, and then there will be people like me who think it's so over the top ridiculous that you can't help but love it.
Pivixki (don't ask me how it's pronounced) are an Australian duo who play piano fucking grindcore...More or less, anyway. Well, not really but it sounds cool, right?

Dec 13, 2010

Mi negra linda, nunca me dejes.

Caifanes - Caifanes

Been a while since I posted some 80s music so here's an album I've been meaning to post for a very long time. Caifanes were a Mexican post-punk/new wave band. If the Cure released an album in Spanish, it would sound exactly like this.

Dec 10, 2010

Theologian - The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face

New project from Leech, formerly known as Navicon Torture Technologies. Bleak power electronics to get depressed to. Really great album, possibly one of my top five favorites of 2010.

Dec 8, 2010

Keeping it black

Funeral Mist - Salvation

Safe pick because it's old enough to not be considered trendy but it's still new enough to be edgy. And they're Swedish! All bullshit aside, this is one really pissed off record with a very disgusting feel to it. Aural equivalent to swimming in an unholy cesspool.

Dec 7, 2010

Method Man - Tical

M-e-t-h-o-d, man.

Dec 5, 2010

Haare - Chemical Witchcraft

A cosmic holocaust drenched in astral blood.

Let's get weird

Don't know about you but this time of year always puts me into an insane mood and there's nothing like listening to a lot of poorly produced black metal to inhibit it. Two classics to ease you into it and then we'll get edgy.

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom

Von - Satanic Blood

Dec 4, 2010

Beherit - Drawing Down The Moon

Outer space black metal.

Dec 3, 2010

Liars - Proud Evolution

Liars are playing in Downtown Los Angeles tomorrow. Check it out.
Third single off Sisterworld: includes a remix and a live version of the title track as well as three b-sides.

Dec 2, 2010

Pissed Jeans - Your Life Is Worth Pissed Jeans

New two song 7" from one of my favorite contemporary bands.

Nov 30, 2010

Godflesh - Streetcleaner

Can't believe Earache has time to delete my Mediafire links in between all the time they dedicate to their amazing releases (ie: Oceano and 100 different re-issues of Slaughter of the Soul.)

Nov 28, 2010

Strength Through Joy - The Force Of Truth And Lies

Australian Rose Clouds of Holocaust Death in June-era worship.

Nov 27, 2010

Bratmobile - The Real Janelle

This EP is pretty much the reason I ever got into music. Allison Wolfe, will you marry me?

Nov 25, 2010

Goodnight, sweet prince.

Coil - Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1

As some of you might know, Peter Christopherson died in his sleep last night at the age of 55. Along with John Balance (also deceased), Christopherson was a founding member of Coil.
This album released in 1999 was the first "proper" Coil album since 1991's Love's Secret Domain, though Balance and Christopherson remained very active during those eight years under other monikers. Departure from early industrial sound into an experimental electronic "moon" music style.

Nov 23, 2010

Ye Olde Maids - God Blesses Us, Mother Dresses Us and other recordings

You guys have been wanting this for over a year now and here it is: Ye Olde Maids was a Wes Eisold (Some Girls, Cold Cave) bedroom recording project from 2006-2008 during his transitory phase in between hardcore and synth pop. Eisold only has one hand so this was his first serious attempt at recording music by himself, which results in really low fi, noisy jams of simple chord progression eventually replaced with keyboards and a voice vocoder.
Heartworm reissue with a demo and previously unreleased recordings, some of which would become Cold Cave songs.

Nov 18, 2010

Vondur - Striðsyfirlýsing

Nov 17, 2010

Jarboe/Telecongnac - Over

Ex-Swans member Jarboe wrote and recorded a song, "Under." The duo Telecognac (Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller) used it as source material to create three untitled tracks included on this short album, Over.

Nov 14, 2010

Death In June - Peaceful Snow

Newest from DEATH IN JUNE. Double disc edition: 1st disc is all new material/2nd disc is Lounge Corps piano instrumental versions of Death In June 'Classics' ranging from 'Heaven Street' in 1981 to 'The Rule Of Thirds' in 2008.
Merzbow & John Wiese - Multiplication

Layers upon layers of East/West harsh noise.

Nov 13, 2010

Organ - Nekrofiilis

For all of you new wave lovers, here's some 1982 Finnish synthpop.

Nov 12, 2010

Various Artists - Hackers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

1 Kruder & Dorfmeister - Original Bedroom Rockers
2 Underworld - Cowgirl
3 The Prodigy - Voodoo People
4 Leftfield - Open Up
5 Carl Cox - Phoebus Apollo
6 Josh Abrahams - The Joker
7 Orbital - Halcyon & On & On
8 Plastico - Communicate (Headquake Hazy Cloud Mix)
9 The Prodigy - One Love
10 Stereo MC's -Connected
11 Ramshackle - Eyes, Lips, Body (Mekon Vocal Mix)
12 Urban Dance Squad - Good Grief
13 Machines Of Loving Grace - Richest Junkie Still Alive (Sank Remix)
14 Squeeze - Heaven Knows

Ridiculously amazing soundtrack to one of the most significant movies of the 1990s.
THE FUTURE LOOKED so much better in 1995: an unending cyber-punk world roamed by in-line skates filled with anamorphic sequences and anti-corporate electronica. Anything and everything is meant to be corrupted with a few keystrokes and if that isn't enough, your girlfriend is Angelina Jolie with a pixie haircut and a New Jersey Devils jersey. FUCK YES. Here's your chance to acquaint yourself with this masterpiece if you haven't already:

Or if you have Netflix, it's on their instant queue list.

Nov 10, 2010

Various Artists - Nippon Girls: Japanese Pop, Beat & Bossa Nova 1966-1970

Very fun compilation of Yé-yé inspired pop songs. Play it at social gatherings and impress your friends.

Nov 9, 2010

Coil - Love's Secret Domain

Re-upped because the original link was deleted.
In my opinion, the best Coil album.

Nov 8, 2010

A View From Nihil - Triumph Of The Broken Will

Very Nietzsche inspired harsh noise from Northern Ireland. This isn't for everybody but for those into noise music, it's a very compelling release.

Nov 7, 2010

Coil presents

Black Light District - A Thousand Lights in a Blackened Room

This is an album by Coil released during the mid 90s when they were going through their multiple side-project phase. Very minimal ambient and droney electronic soundscapes that foreshadowed their later "moon music" phase. The name Black Light District is taken from a track by Boyd Rice recorded for the Bethel cassette out by John Balance on his Hearsay And Heresy label in 1984.

If the light takes us

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Nov 6, 2010

The Body - All the Waters of the Earth Shall Turn to Blood

Not a very good band name but a pretty damn good record. Two piece Providence, RI fucked up doom metal: shrieked vocals, odd sampling, backed by a choir. In a year that's been so over saturated with Sabbath influenced amplifier worship, this is a real standout album.

Nov 4, 2010

Genocide Organ - Leichenlinie

1989 German industrial/power electronics. 2009 reissue with two extra tracks.

Nov 2, 2010

Drunkest in the flood.

Some Girls - Live at the BBC

Before Wes Eisold fronted a New Order tribute band, before Justin Pearson jumped the electro rave bandwagon, before Rob Moran joined a castrated Botch, before Chuck Rowell decided he was going to be straight and start a Jesus and Mary Chain rip-off band THERE WAS SOME GIRLS: a San Diego five piece taking influence from all over the musical spectrum to create their boundary pushing hardcore.
Hot damn, I'm stoked that this has finally been "released" after four years. Features a never released track titled "Get Off The Dove."

Nov 1, 2010

Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality

Smoke weed; praise Jesus.

Oct 30, 2010

Chelsea Wolfe - Ἀποκάλυψις

Saw Chelsea Wolfe last night. Blown away.
Quite literally apocalyptic folk for your listening displeasure. This is only half of the release; four more tracks have been added to it since I acquired this. You can check them out here.

Oct 29, 2010

Mayhem - Wolf's Lair Abyss

An overlooked EP by Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM. First studio recording after De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, though it was released three years after and featured a very distinct sound. Highlights are Maniac's vocals and Hellhammer's drumming.

Oct 27, 2010

Wolvserpent - Blood Seed

A few weeks ago I posted an album by a doom drone duo named Pussygutt. They changed their name and released this impeccable album on 20 Buck Spin. One of my favorites of 2010.

Oct 26, 2010

Moderne - Moderne/L'Espionne Aimait La Musique

Obscure 1980-81 French synthpop double release compiling both of this band's LPs and re-issued last year. You don't just want this, you fucking need it.
Dif Juz - Out of the Trees

Went to Burger a few weeks ago and got this because it was the most pretentious thing that caught my eye: 4AD 80s band with a weird name and a cool cover. Hadn't listened to it until last week when I was stuck doing calculus all day and it surprised me with how good it was. This is a compilation of two of their early EPs released in 1981. One of them is remixed and partly re-recorded, though I hear it's a very slight difference from the original.
Anyway, Dif Juz were a British post punk band on 4AD. Mostly instrumental laid back ethereal post punk jams with dub influence.

Danzig Discography

Part four of Danzig's selected discography: Classic Danzig.
DANZIG is the current musical outlet for Glenn Danzig, formed in '87 as a transformation of his previous band Samhain when he scored a deal with Rick Rubin. Classic line-up is considered to be Eerie Von (who played bass in Samhain), John Christ, and Chuck Biscuits, with Rubin producing the band's first four records. Together they'd go on to make four of the best metal records with heavy blues and doom influence to ever be recorded.

Danzig I

Danzig II: Lucifuge

Danzig III: How The Gods Kill
