AA - Essential Entertainment

Do you like rare and obscure 1980s Belgian post punk to one up your friends when it's your turn to play music in a social situation for whatever reason? If so, this record is fucking perfect for you. AA was a band started in late 1980 by a few high school drop outs in middle of nowhere Belgium. They recorded this EP limited to 900 copies and were never heard of again until last year when it was reissued and limited to 500 copies. Sounds like the Fall meets the coolest Factory records band you've never heard.

Not in a Slint way but I miss you.

Slint - Spiderland

Was going to upload this yesterday as a great soundtrack to shitty rainy days where you're feeling down, then some fucked up stuff happened and it became even more relevant.
Slint was an American four piece band forming in the mid 80s and disbanded in 1991, pioneering what I guess you can call the "math rock" genre. They hooked up with Steve Albini who produced their overlooked first record, split with him and a member due to conflicts on sound direction, released this gem, and disappeared into obscurity up until a few years ago. This band alienates a lot of people because even though Slint is one of these quintessential bands indie alternative college radio kids love to name drop, their music isn't really welcoming or accessible. It's a dry record with grating guitars, thumping bass, walloping drums, vocals that are usually spoken narratives regarding some form of self loathing depression with the occasional regretful heart wrenching yells: this record is not a fucking feel good record.

I'm in a ridiculously bad/pissed mood today: here's some grindcore perfect for brooding at maximum decibels.

Insect Warfare - At War With Grindcore EP

Made it trendy to hate on trendy kids.

Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard

Revolutionized modern grindcore.

Gridlink - Amber Gray

Because you slept on Discordance Axis and you probably slept on this gem too.

Cold Cave - Love Comes Close

Matador took this down a while ago, now I'm putting it back up.

The In Sounds From Way Out.

Patrick Macnee & Honor Blackman - Kinky Boots

Patrick Macnee and Honor Blackman were stars of the 1960s British show The Avengers. The song was recorded from the perspective of their characters in the program in reference to Blackman's leather boots on the show. Give this a listen if you're into sexy little school girls.
Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues (1983)

Naive Melody. 'Nuff said.

If Jesus Had Machine Guns - Vol. 1

If Jesus Had Machine Guns is the moniker under which Connecticut native Jimi Patterson releases his lo fi bedroom recordings. After hearing Dan Barrett (Have A Nice Life) rave about him for months I decided to check it out and was very impressed. Unique blend of catchy pop melodies with post punk, goth, and shoegaze all laced in there.

Slayer - Reign In Blood (1986)

I know you're thinking EW SLAYER long hair Satanic white supremacists and you wanna go hide behind your Grizzly Bear albums, but this is without a doubt the greatest thrash metal record of all time. AND it's in glorious 320 AND it's an original 1986 CD rip where the mastering is messed up so the ending of Postmortem actually plays at the beginning of Raining Blood and makes it that much more brutal.

Scorpion Wind - Heaven Sent

Koala folk.

Jarboe is best known for her work with Swans, of which she was a permanent member from the mid 80s until the group's break up. Since then she's gone on to lead a prolific solo career releasing something like a dozen albums and collaborating with at least twice as many artists.

Jarboe - Thirteen Masks (1991)

2004 remastered reissue of her 1991 solo debut, includes three bonus tracks.

The Ladies - They Mean Us

Rob Crow and Zach Hill pretty much makes this one of the greatest collaborations of all fucking time.
Nervous Cop - Nervous Cop

Nervous Cop began as a collaborative jam session between drummers Zach Hill of Hella and Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. Somewhere along the line they decided to cut and paste it back together digitally, asking the at the time unknown Joanna Newsom to contribute some harp, and John Dieterich to add electronics. The end result is the epitome of an acquired taste. I know most people will write it off as pretentious noise at first listen, but this is a really great record that demands your full attention.
