The Nation Of Ulysses was a DC band in the early 90s. They fused manic straight edge punk and free jazz rhythms with a radical ideology to become one of Refuse's largest influences.
Most obvious is the live spoken word intro on this record mirrored at the beginning of "Protest Song '68". Nation of Ulysses saw themselves as a political party rather than a band: an idea Refused would adopt and form a "party programme." Other things the bands shared: dressing well, political zines, the idea that one does not need to be a great musician to create music, and affinity for Ornette Coleman.

I thought you didn't like these guys.
I remember them to act like jerks in concert, though I have to admit that their music was a little too out there for my rather close-minded hardcore sensibilities back then. Nowadays I appreciate Ian Svenonious and his Soft Focus talk show thang. And a friend told me about his having been voted Sassiest Boy in America back when they waited tables together and that makes me grin from ear to ear.
I heard their shows were really violent. Something about people would always end up being covered in someone else's blood or something.
